Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Officer, Youth Leadership, this position will support the delivery of the AWF-Wall Youth Leadership Program. The AWF-Wall Youth Leadership Program is a  training program that builds the capacity of young African professionals in conservation , to drive systemic change on various environmental issues. The program is delivered through two distinct but complementary tracks: the AWF-Wall Policy and the AWF-Wall Leadership & Management Fellowship. Launched in 2022, the program is run on a hybrid model that combines both virtual and in-person training elements. In 2026, the program is expanding to a digital version as we continue to deliver the hybrid version. The position will support the research and the administrative tasks towards the design and development of the digital courses as well as delivering the hybrid program that onboards 30 fellows per year.. 

Required capabilities for this position are exposure to research and administrative support, impeccable organisational skills, being able to work with minimal supervision, being a team player with interpersonal skills, attention to detail, confidence, and the ability to work and communicate with staff from other departments and external stakeholders.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Research and Content Development

  • Support in the research and analysis of output that will inform the final digital course, as guided by the Senior Officer, Youth Leadership. Research will form a bulk of this role and will cover the following areas:
  • Analysis of current hybrid training materials to inform adaptation to the digital version
  • Research and analyse existing digital courses to identify effective learning methodologies, interactivity mechanisms, and engagement strategies suitable for the digital version
  • Research of various e learning platforms to identify suitable hosting platforms
  • Mapping out stakeholders who would support the delivery of the digital version
  • Support content development–related administrative tasks, including analysis of research outputs, brainstorming support, and e-learning platform content setup
  • Participate in content development and design sessions 

Administrative and logistical support

  • Provide high quality support to the AWF-Wall Youth Leaderhsip Program, including scheduling and recording of meetings, monitor documents for signature/approval, monitor and follow up issues and priorities, handle incoming correspondence and internal and external correspondence
  • Lead the preparation, compilation, and systematic filing of research outcome documents, including but not limited to needs analysis reports, market research reports, and other analytical outputs generated from the research process.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for the delivery of the hybrid version, including virtual sessions scheduling, Learning Management System management, participant communications, Two in-person workshop support , and reporting support as required.

Requirements and skills

  • At least 1 year of working experience/exposure in environmental sciences, conservation, business, social innovation, community development, social sciences or a related field.
  • A degree in environmental, development, political or social studies or any related field
  • Must be passionate about conservation and sustainable development, and working in youth-oriented projects. 
  • Administrative, organisational, and time management skills 
  • Good multi-cultural and interpersonal skills 
  • Proven written, analytical, presentation and computing skills.
  • Exposure to supporting research activities, such as needs assessments, market or landscape analysis, baseline studies, desktop reviews, stakeholder analysis, or similar research exercises.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English. Fluency in French is an added advantage

Officer, Policy Fellowships at African Wildlife Foundation (AWF)

Position Summary

The AWF Youth Engagement Strategy has 3 pillars, namely: Leadership, Opportunities and Networks. Reporting to the Senior Officer, Youth Leadership, The Officer, Policy Fellowship will be responsible for delivering the AWF-Wall Policy Fellowship, a track of the AWF-Wall Youth Leadership Program. 

The AWF-Wall Policy Fellowship is a 9 months training program implemented by the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) in Collaboration with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) since 2022, with the aim of Building a pool of young African professionals skilled in International Biodiversity Governance, particularly the CBD, to influence policy at national, regional, and global levels. 

The role will deliver its work while ensuring alignemt with the sister track- the AWF-Wall Leadership and Management Fellowship and maintaining key focus to overall AWF priorities and strategic direction.

  • Design and thereafter implement the new online version of the AWF-Wall Policy Fellowship, adapted from the flagship version  
  • Continue to implement future cohorts of the flagship version of the AWF-Wall Policy Fellowship 
  • Provide technical guidance to the implementing partners and consultants of the AWF-Wall Policy Fellowship
  • Coordinate the recruitment and supervision of experts/contract institutions as required to undertake tasks of the implementation of training programs.
  • Coordinate the recruitment of trainee candidates for the program .
  • Develop workplan and curriculum and deliver on the leaderships trainings as scheduled.
  • Facilitate and train on various courses/modules as necessary. 
  • Plan and coordinate field trips and policy conferences for leadership trainings.
  • Maintain records on technical and financial aspects of program operation, including monitoring of project activities and their outcomes, as well as minutes, decisions and recommendations of meetings and workshops.

Partnership and Communications

  • Support the establishment and maintenance of partnerships that can support the AWF-Wall Policy Fellowship.
  • Ensure effective liaison and maintain good communication with relevant stakeholders.
  • Support to generating ideas for products and initiatives that tell and communicate the powerful stories of young people.

Measuring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL)

  • Work with the AWF M&E global team to ensure that MEAL tools are developed, rolled out and analyzed according to institutional metrics; indicators are tracked; and findings inform the Youth Programming.
  • Coordinate with communications and the Knowledge management department teams so that most significant change stories are documented, filed, and disseminated.

This role will ensure that AWF alumni from various programs are engaged and empowered to continue driving conservation action and policy. The role will also coordinate emerging initiatives, ensuring timely and effective implementation.
