ROLE OVERVIEW

Designation: Head Of Credit
Reports to: Chief Operations Officer

JOB SUMMARY
The primary responsibility of the Head of Credit is to develop, implement, and continuously enhance the institution’s credit strategy, policies, procedures, and credit risk management framework to ensure sustainable growth of the loan portfolio, strong asset quality, profitability, and financial stability of the institution.

The incumbent will ensure that all lending activities are conducted within the institution’s approved risk appetite, regulatory requirements, and internal credit policies while supporting business growth objectives.

The role will provide leadership in all credit functions including credit origination, underwriting, credit approvals coordination, portfolio management, collections oversight, recoveries management, credit administration, monitoring and reporting, and continuous improvement of credit systems and processes.

The Head of Credit will work closely with Business, Operations, Risk, and Finance teams to ensure efficient credit delivery, strong portfolio performance, and an excellent customer experience.

This job reports to the COO and the incumbent shall function in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and regulatory frameworks governing microfinance institutions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

As a member of senior management, the Head of Credit shall support the COO and Executive Management in:

a) Strategic Credit Leadership

  • Developing and implementing the institution’s credit strategy aligned to overall business growth and sustainability objectives.
  • Supporting formulation of credit risk appetite and lending frameworks across all product lines.
  • Contributing to annual business planning through portfolio growth projections and risk analysis.
  • Ensuring credit policy alignment with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.

b) Credit Origination and Underwriting

  • Overseeing credit appraisal, underwriting, and structuring of loan facilities.
  • Ensuring high-quality credit decisions that balance growth, risk, and profitability.
  • Reviewing and recommending credit applications within delegated authority limits.
  • Ensuring proper analysis of customer financials, cash flows, and repayment capacity.
  • Maintaining consistency and integrity in credit evaluation standards across all lending channels.

c) Portfolio Management and Risk Control

  • Monitoring overall loan portfolio performance including PAR, NPLs, write-offs, and recovery trends.
  • Ensuring early identification and management of deteriorating accounts through effective early warning systems.
  • Overseeing restructuring, rescheduling, and exit strategies for high-risk accounts.
  • Ensuring compliance with credit covenants, limits, and internal risk controls.
  • Preparing periodic portfolio performance and risk reports for management and Board review.

d) Collections and Recoveries Oversight

  • Leading effective collections and recoveries strategies to minimize defaults and credit losses.
  • Ensuring timely follow-up on overdue accounts and escalation of delinquent cases.
  • Supporting recovery actions including restructuring, legal recovery, and asset repossession where necessary.
  • Strengthening collaboration with collections teams to improve repayment performance.

e) Credit Operations and Process Efficiency

  • Ensuring efficient end-to-end credit processes including application processing, approvals, disbursements, and monitoring.
  • Driving continuous improvement in credit turnaround time (TAT) and operational efficiency.
  • Supporting digitization and automation of credit workflows and reporting systems.
  • Ensuring proper documentation, file management, and credit records integrity.

f) Compliance, Governance & Reporting

  • Ensuring strict adherence to internal credit policies, regulatory requirements, and audit standards.
  • Maintaining a strong internal control environment within the credit function.
  • Coordinating internal and external audit engagements related to credit operations.
  • Preparing and submitting periodic credit performance, risk, and portfolio reports.

g) Leadership, Stakeholder Management & Capacity Building

  • Providing leadership, coaching, and mentorship to the credit team.
  • Working closely with Business Development, Operations, Finance, and Risk teams to support business growth.
  • Supporting staff training and capacity development in credit analysis and risk management.
  • Promoting a culture of accountability, performance, and ethical lending practices.
  • Performing any other duties as may be assigned by the COO or Executive Management.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education Academic Qualification
• Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or related field.

Professional Qualifications / Membership to professional bodies.
• CPA (K), ACCA, or equivalent professional qualification is an added advantage.
• Training in Credit Management, Risk Management, or Financial Analysis is desirable.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and credit management systems.

Experience
Minimum of 5–7 years relevant experience in credit, lending, banking, or microfinance.

At least 2–3 years in a senior credit management or supervisory role.

Proven experience in credit underwriting, portfolio management, and recoveries.
