The Pleasure Fellowship 2025 – Open To Individuals Around The World
Welcome, Pleasure Champion!
The Pleasure Project is excited to announce applications for the 2025 Pleasure
Fellowship—a unique, global opportunity for changemakers who are passionate
about pleasure-inclusive sexual health. If you’re eager to amplify pleasure as
a fundamental part of health, rights, and wellbeing, this fellowship is
designed just for you.
This program supports individuals from around the world in
building knowledge, sharpening advocacy skills, and implementing innovative
projects that center pleasure in sexual health and rights work.
What Is the Pleasure Fellowship?
The Pleasure Fellowship is a six-month,
virtual learning and collaboration program that brings together a cohort of
passionate individuals working to shift the sexual health and rights landscape
by putting pleasure at the center. Whether you’re a practitioner, researcher,
activist, educator, or creative, this is your chance to grow, connect, and

The 2025 fellowship will run from November 2025
through April 2026, with all sessions conducted online.
Over the course of the program, fellows will:
- Participate
in 6 to 8 themed online group learning sessions led by
global experts
- Receive individual
mentorship through at least two one-on-one mentoring sessions
- Develop
and refine a pleasure-inclusive project idea to implement after the
learning phase
- Join a
vibrant community of peers dedicated to changing narratives around sex,
health, and pleasure
Fellowship Project Support
Following the initial six-month learning phase, fellows will
have the opportunity to put their ideas into action. Each fellow can apply for
up to $1,500 USD in project funding to bring their proposal to
life. Projects can take many forms, including but not limited to:
- Writing
a blog series or research article
- Hosting
community dialogues or workshops
- Launching
a podcast
- Conducting
interviews or assessments within your organization
- Piloting
creative, arts-based advocacy campaigns
We encourage creativity, innovation, and community-rooted
approaches. The only requirement is that your project promotes pleasure-inclusive
sexual health and rights.
Who Should Apply?
We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds,
experiences, and regions who are committed to advocating for pleasure-positive,

do not expect perfect grammar or polished academic writing in
your application. We are far more interested in your ideas, passion, and lived
experience than in perfect language. Please feel comfortable expressing
yourself authentically.
Accessibility and Inclusion
The Pleasure Project is committed to ensuring the fellowship
application process is as accessible and inclusive as possible. If you face any
barriers or require specific support to complete your application, please reach
out to us at info@thepleasureproject.org.

Application Details
To apply, please fill out our online application form via
Google Forms: Click here to apply now
Important: Before applying, make sure to download and carefully
read the Fellowship Guidelines. The form also contains a
detailed F.A.Q. section to answer any questions you may have.
We expect to select a maximum of 15 fellows for
the 2025 cohort. If you are selected, you’ll be joining a growing global
network of Pleasure Fellows who are actively working to reframe the way we talk
about, teach, and experience sexual health.
Why This Fellowship Matters
For too long, sexual health programming has focused
primarily on disease prevention, risk, and pathology—often ignoring or
stigmatizing pleasure. The Pleasure Project believes that pleasure is not a
luxury—it’s a right, a source of power, and an essential part of wellbeing.
By investing in emerging leaders who are ready to center
pleasure in their work, we are collectively building a more joyful, inclusive,
and effective movement for sexual and reproductive rights.

Postdoctoral Writing Fellowships
This three-month fellowship will support recent postdoctoral
scholars to deliver publication-ready research articles within the disciplines
of humanities and social sciences in Eastern Africa, for submission to
either Azania: Archaeological Research in Africa, or to the Journal
of Eastern African Studies. Articles should be based on PhD research
completed within the last two years, at the time of application. Fellows will
work independently to deliver the article to one of the BIEA’s journals by the
end of the fellowship agreement. They may be based either at home, their own
institution, or may make use of the BIEA library in Nairobi. BIEA takes no part
in production, proofreading or language checking, which are the responsibility
of the authors.
The writing grant stipend is £1,200 per month for three
months, at the end of which the article must be submitted to the relevant
journal. Applicants must be able to confirm that they are only working a
maximum of 15 hours per week in other employment during the time they are
receiving the writing grant. Fellowships can be commenced at a convenient time
for the successful applicants, providing that the contract is completed by 31
January 2026. Fellows will need to supply a blog, a short report for BIEA’s
Annual Review, photos and social media posts to the BIEA for publication and be
available for a public presentation (either in person, or online). Download
further details, and the application form here. Apply by
5pm BST / 7pm EAT, Friday 11 April 2025.
Thematic Grants
This grant supports original research projects in or about
Eastern Africa from any discipline in the humanities and social sciences. We
welcome applications from postgraduate students; researchers who have not
followed conventional academic careers but whose local knowledge or contacts
enable them to conduct high quality research; and/or collaborative projects
involving established scholars, where resources are ring-fenced for early
career or Africa-based project partners. Research projects must engage with one
or more of the following BIEA research themes: Africa in the World; Retelling
the Past; Changing Environments; Urban Lives; Technologies of Knowledge; Next
Generations (further information on these themes is available here).
The grants may be used to catalyse new research agendas, provide seed funding
for small projects that lay the ground for larger projects, or to build on
existing research. Priority is given to researchers based in the UK or Eastern
Africa (defined broadly), and to excellent proposals from researchers or
research teams who have limited access to other sources of funds. All funds
must be used directly to support research.
Grants are normally between £500 and £1,000, but up to
£1,500 may be awarded. Successful applicants will be expected to complete the
research by 31 January 2026. They must also supply a blog, a short report for
BIEA’s Annual Review, social media post and photos to the BIEA; and be
available for a public presentation (either in person or online). Download
further details, and the application form here. Apply by
5pm BST / 7pm EAT, Friday 11 April 2025.
Dissemination Grants
This grant is an opportunity for postdoctoral researchers in
the humanities and social sciences to ‘bring research home’ to any country in
Eastern Africa. It supports scholars to return to the location of their PhD
research up to three years after the successful completion of their doctorate.
The aim is to support postdoctoral scholars to present their findings to the
participants and stakeholders in the research, and to explore future potential
research, collaboration, policy or practice agendas.
The maximum grant available is £3,000 per scholar.
Successful applicants will be expected to complete the dissemination by 31
January 2026. They must also supply a blog, a short report for BIEA’s Annual
Review, social media post and photos to the BIEA; and be available for a public
presentation (either in person or online). Download further details,
and the application form here. Apply by 5pm BST / 7pm EAT, Friday 11 April
2025.
Workshop Grants
This grant supports international research workshops for
humanities or social sciences scholars working in or on Eastern Africa. All
workshops should include academics from both Africa and the UK, coming together
for a minimum of one day. Workshop grants can be used to facilitate
participation either by covering the cost of travel for participants or
contributing towards event space hire costs. Suitable outputs include a funding
application for collaborative research, a collaborative publication, a journal
special issue or similar.
The maximum amount available is £2000, with up to £4,000 per
workshop available in exceptional circumstances, requiring specific justification.
Applicants may either hold the event at the BIEA in Nairobi or make appropriate
alternative arrangements. The workshop must be completed by 31 January 2026.
Applicants will be expected to supply a blog, a report for BIEA’s Annual
Review, social media posts and photos to the BIEA for publication; and to
acknowledge BIEA in any related outputs. Download further details, and
the application form here. Apply by 5pm BST / 7pm EAT, Friday 11 April
2025.
Impact Grants
Impact grants support scholars at any stage of their
postdoctoral career to translate their academic research findings into policies
or practices for the benefit of people and places in Eastern Africa. Applicants
should present a proposal that is rooted in previous or ongoing research in
humanities and social sciences and clearly designed to achieve impact –
creating a positive change in society, culture, the environment or the economy.
Proposals must show the potential for a viable collaboration with partners in
the Eastern African region that extends beyond academia, for instance with
policymakers, civil society organisations, activists, artists, museums,
cultural institutions or enterprises. They should explain the pathways to
impact and the ways that impact will be evaluated within the project. Projects
should also relate to the BIEA mission and research themes and contribute to
global or regional policy agendas to promote sustainable development,
peacebuilding, human rights, justice, cultural heritage or historical
understanding.
Standard grants are available up to £2000; if an
exceptionally strong case is made, we may award up to £4000. Successful
applicants will be expected to complete the impact activity by 31 January 2026.
They must also supply a blog, a short report for BIEA’s Annual Review, social
media post and photos to the BIEA; and be available for a public presentation
(either in person or online). Download further details, and the
application form here.
Apply by 5pm BST / 7pm EAT, Friday 11 April 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions
ARUA Early-Career Research Fellowships – 2025
1. About the Fellowship
This Early-Career Research Fellowship is being initiated by the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA), with support from the Mastercard Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York. It will support up to forty-two (42) early-career research fellows to undertake globally competitive research at the ARUA Centres of Excellence (CoEs) for six months each, starting from July 2025. At least 70% of the fellowships will be awarded to female candidates. Also, applicants must be no older than 35 years at the time of application.
The goal is to strengthen the capacity of early-career researchers at African universities by giving them time away from teaching responsibilities at their home institutions while working with very senior and accomplished researchers. CoEs are expected to host research fellows from countries other than their own.
1.1 About ARUA
The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) is a network of leading universities from different African countries, with different historical backgrounds, but with a common vision. This vision is to make African researchers and institutions globally competitive while contributing significantly to the generation of knowledge for the socioeconomic transformation of the continent. The network, right from inception, was intended to be different from any other regional university network in Africa. The difference was to come largely from the approach to be employed, namely bringing together a number of peer African institutions that were willing to work together by pooling their limited resources, with a view to generating a critical mass that could more effectively support their limited but growing numbers of researchers. Underlying the approach was the conviction that they could leverage their resources effectively for additional resources from outside. ARUA is currently pursuing this vision through its thirteen (13) CoEs that vary across various science and non-science disciplines.
1.2 About the Mastercard Foundation
The Mastercard Foundation, established in 2006 by Mastercard, is a global NGO headquartered in Toronto. Focused on Africa since 2018, the Foundation addresses numerous challenges on the continent, and this includes economic inequality, education access, and decent work opportunities through initiatives like the Young Africa Works strategy and partnerships with several institutions. Its Scholars Program has supported over 50,000 African youth since 2012, emphasizing leadership development and systemic change in education. The Foundation prioritizes marginalized groups and youth-led solutions.
1.3 About the Carnegie Corporation of New York
The Carnegie Corporation of New York is one of the United States of America's oldest grant-making foundations established by Andrew Carnegie to promote the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding. In keeping with this mandate, the Corporation's work focuses on the issues that Andrew Carnegie considered of paramount importance: international peace, the advancement of education and knowledge, and the strength of democracy. The Corporation supports four key program areas, including Education, Democracy, International Peace and Security, and Higher Education and Research in Africa.
2. Background
ARUA has established thirteen (13) Centres of Excellence (CoEs) across various disciplines to support its vision. These CoEs reflect the current priority areas of ARUA, and they are expected to significantly enhance research and graduate training. Currently, the CoEs are organised as follows: (i) Energy, (ii) Unemployment and Skills Development, (iii) Non-Communicable Diseases, (iv) Inequality Research, (v) Notion of Identity in Africa, (vi) Migration and Mobility, (vii) Sustainable Food Systems, (viii) Urbanization and Habitable Cities, (ix) Climate and Development, (x) Good Governance, (xi) Post-Conflict Societies, (xii) Water, and (xiii) Materials, Energy & Nanotechnology (MEN).
To support the activities of these centers, ARUA is announcing a residential Early Career Research Fellowship that is expected to last for 6 months. During this period, prospective research fellows are expected to stay at the affiliated university of the respective CoE and conduct research related to their existing projects. Successful candidates are also expected to explore new lines of research with the approval of the Centre’s Director. Prospective candidates are encouraged to visit the ARUA website (https://arua.org/centres-of-excellence/) as well as those of the 13 CoEs to familiarize themselves with their ongoing research projects.
ARUA views this Early Career Research Fellowship as critical to consolidating the progress being made by the CoEs, which aligns with the main visions of the network as well as the institutions supporting the fellowship. ARUA, therefore, seeks to use this opportunity to enhance the relevance of postgraduate training for early-career researchers.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS| REOPENED - Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship (FAR-LEAF II)
Future Africa at the University of Pretoria has reopened the call for applications for the Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship (FAR-LeaF II) to encourage broader participation from early-career researchers across the continent.
This renewed call is specifically intended to attract new applicants who meet the updated eligibility criteria, including holding a PhD awarded no earlier than 2017 (within the past eight years) and being under the age of 38 at the time of application. Applications submitted during the initial call remain under consideration. This reopening places particular emphasis on engaging younger researchers to promote greater diversity and inclusivity within the FAR-LeaF II cohort.
ABOUT THE FAR-LEAF II FELLOWSHIP
The Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship is a
two-year research-oriented fellowship programme, supported by the Carnegie
Corporation of New York, and hosted at Future Africa. The programme focuses on
future-looking science leadership and developing the next generation of African
scientists and academics.
The programme seeks to build a network of emerging African
scientists with the skills needed to apply transformative research methods and
approaches in addressing complex sustainability challenges in Africa, including
inter- and transdisciplinarity, systems thinking, and futures literacy.
Furthermore, it will provide multiple research and learning opportunities
covering different sectors of science and society, aiming to create sustainable
solutions in a real-world context, establishing communities of practice, and
addressing the broad scope of sustainability, sustainable development,
resilience, and greater social cohesion.
Applicants should be receptive to applying transdisciplinary science and developing leadership skills to generate positive societal changes, whilst striving for a future academic leadership position. Successful applicants to the programme will receive a two-year fellowship, with training on transdisciplinary research approaches, through Future Africa at the University of Pretoria and its partners, and through inclusive co- design of fellows’ research projects with relevant role-players.
The training and support provided by the FAR-LeaF II programme will create opportunities to establish research relationships at diverse African universities, in collaboration with and through mentorship opportunities offered by the University of Pretoria.
The FAR-LeaF II programme follows the first FAR-LeaF programme, which supported research focused on sustainability and well-being on the African continent. The research in the new FAR-LeaF II programme will extend and build upon the FAR-LeaF research, with focus areas of sustainability science, resilience, and social cohesion.
The Fellowship will support early-career researchers in conducting relevant research projects in the context of relevant national and regional challenges in sustainable development.
The importance and relevance of sustainability science in
Africa is exemplified by the need to:
- Advance the development and full integration of the natural sciences with the social and human sciences as a cross-cutting research approach.
- Generate actionable knowledge relevant to achieving sustainable development goals in an African context.
- Articulate African perspectives on and solutions to geo-political challenges and opportunities related to achieving these goals.
The envisaged research will harness the tools of the digital revolution to fuel scientific discovery and advance societal engagement to pursue sustainability. Technology is embedded in the research programme, and training will ensure that the research projects build on cutting-edge technological advancement to deliver tangible research outputs that are inclusive and transformative by nature.
The proposed research and training (in the programme) will integrate research and technology skills to strengthen scientific capacity. Applying novel methodologies on co-design and co-production and other relevant approaches is vital for high-quality integrated research.
