๐DevOps Engineer at 4G Capital
About 4G Capital
4G Capital is a leading digital credit provider operating
across Kenya and Uganda, regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya and the Uganda
Microfinance Regulatory Authority. We combine technology, financial education,
and unsecured credit to enable micro and small business growth across East
Africa. We are a Certified B Corporation serving over a million customers
across our markets.
Our technology platform is built on Google Cloud Platform
with a serverless-first architecture. We run Java-based backend services
alongside web, Android, and desktop applications, supporting high transaction
volumes across mobile, web, and partner channels.
The role
We are hiring an experienced DevOps Engineer to take
ownership of significant areas of our delivery and runtime engineering. You
will design, build, and operate the platform capabilities that our engineering
teams rely on every day — the cloud runtime, the CI/CD pipelines, the API
gateway, and the release infrastructure for our mobile and desktop
applications.
This is a hands-on engineering role with substantial scope.
You will work across the full delivery lifecycle, set technical direction
within your areas, partner closely with engineering teams to ensure what you
build is well-adopted, and mentor engineers around you. We treat our platform
as a product and the wider engineering organisation as our customer.
What you will do
• Lead the design, evolution, and operation of our cloud
runtime platform, including service patterns, deployment configurations, and
runtime standards
• Own significant areas of our infrastructure-as-code
estate, including module design, state management, and refactoring legacy
configurations into maintainable patterns
• Build and operate the CI/CD pipeline platform that serves
engineering teams across the organisation, including the trunk-based
development workflows that are our delivery standard
• Drive improvements in our API gateway platform, including
proxy patterns, local development workflows, and automated deployment
• Build and maintain release pipelines for our mobile and
desktop applications, including build, signing, distribution, and version
management
• Develop service templates and golden paths that make new
services production-ready by default, with CI/CD, observability, security, and
platform standards integrated from the start
• Pilot new platform capabilities on real services, document
them clearly, and support engineering teams as they adopt them
• Participate in the platform on-call rotation for the
capabilities we ship
• Mentor engineers and help shape the technical direction of
the DevOps team
What we are looking for
Required
• Significant experience in DevOps, platform engineering, or
site reliability
engineering, with demonstrated progression into roles of
increasing scope and technical leadership
• Deep hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform across
compute, networking, identity, and operations services
• Strong proficiency with Terraform, including module design
and refactoring large infrastructure-as-code estates
• Significant experience building and operating CI/CD
pipelines that serve multiple engineering teams
• Demonstrated ownership of production systems, including
on-call and incident response
• Practical understanding of trunk-based development, branch
protection, and modern release engineering
• Proficiency with containerised workloads, serverless
architectures, and cloud-native design patterns
• Strong scripting and automation skills in Bash, Python, or
similar
• A track record of producing platform capabilities and
documentation that other engineers genuinely adopt
• Experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical
direction across teams
Nice to have
• Hands-on experience with enterprise API gateways
• Experience building mobile or desktop CI/CD pipelines,
including code signing and store distribution
• Familiarity with internal developer portals
• Background in regulated industries, particularly financial
services or fintech
• Google cloud certifications such as Professional cloud
DevOps Engineer or professional cloud architect
How you work
The engineers who thrive on our team treat the platform as a
product. They think about adoption as part of delivery. They write
documentation while building, not after. They communicate clearly, take
ownership of outcomes, and know when to say “not yet” when scope and capacity
are at odds.
What we offer
• A meaningful role at a company that combines commercial
growth with positive impact across East Africa
• The opportunity to work on a modern cloud-native platform
serving real customers at scale
• Engineering leadership that respects depth, autonomy, and
craft
• Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits
• A hybrid working arrangement based in Nairobi
How to apply
Submit your CV and a short cover note describing a platform
capability you have built, evolved, or operated, and what you learned from the
experience. We review applications on a rolling basis.
