Resident anesthesiologist

Position:Resident anesthesiologist

Reports to:    Director of Medical Services

Department:Clinical  

Job purpose  

The overall purpose of this job is to provide patient care in line with hospital’s values, mission and vision.

Key duties and responsibilities 

  1. Complete and document preoperative anesthesia evaluations of patients and order necessary lab work/consultation or any other preoperative investigations at least the day prior to surgery.
  2. Review preoperative patient charts for pertinent lab work, history and physical examination, vital signs chart, fluid status and medication sheet.
  3. Choose the safest and most appropriate anaesthetic for the patient: general, regional, MAC, local or combination and utilize the correct monitors for that anaesthetic for the duration of the surgery.  Manage the patient airway adequately utilizing the mask, bag-valve mask, intubation, LMA, and other emergency airway procedures. 
  4. Accurately manage fluid resuscitation in the patient and measure blood loss regularly. 
  5. Oversee the safe functioning of the anesthesia machine, oxygen supply, suction, and all equipment necessary to provide anesthesia in close consultation with the biomedical team.  
  6. Perform various regional anesthesia techniques as required.  
  7. Assess and implement pain management in the post-operative recovery period.
  8. Identify and treat intra operative & post-operative anesthesia complications as soon as they occur.
  9. Accurately and thoroughly chart patient physiological data, medications & fluids administered contemporaneously pre, intra, and post operatively.
  10. Set up all necessary monitors and drugs, and check the anesthesia machine and oxygen supply prior to each anesthetic. 
  11. Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications for Resident Physician

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
  • Master of Medicine (MMed) degree in Anesthesiology   from a recognized institution
  • Full registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  • Completion of internship and 6–12 months’ post-internship.
  • Clinical competence, strong judgment, and professionalism.

Job purpose  

The overall purpose of this job is to provide patient care in line with hospital’s values, mission and vision.

Key duties and responsibilities 

  1. Provide a continuous on-site medical support service to meet the needs of patients and the hospital.
  2. Diagnose internal injuries and diseases, and prescribe medication or surgery;
  3. Order and analyze tests like X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs;
  4. Schedule operations, coordinate the staff, plan the procedures, and order instruments and other supplies.
  5. Conduct examinations to ill patients and evaluate symptoms to determine their medical condition and surgical risks.
  6. Analyze patient’s medical history, medication allergies, physical condition, and examination results to verify operation’s necessity and to determine best procedure.
  7. Prescribe preoperative and postoperative treatments and procedures, such as sedatives, diets, antibiotics, and preparation and treatment of the patient’s operative area.
  8. Effectively document patient information to show current findings and treatments and write discharge summaries and medical reports for patients.
  9. Conduct major and minor ward rounds as required and be available to discuss patient treatment plans.
  10. Perform medical and surgical procedures as licensed.
  11. Ensure that professional clinical standards and other legal frameworks are complied with in all the clinical departments of the hospital
  12. Represent the hospital in medical-legal matters when called upon.
  13. Conduct and participate in Continuous Medical Education (CME), Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and train and supervise medical students and interns in the hospital.
  14. Participate and serve in Clinical Committees such as Mortality/Morbidity, Clinical Audit, Infection Prevention & Control, Waste Management and other health committees.
